Internationally known photojournalist and “Aussie” photographer Greg Newington offers aspiring photojournalists the theory, history and ethics of photojournalism as well as practice assignments (with deadlines!) in Serenbe Community, with a focus on how to publish students’ work to build portfolios--plus many interesting anecdotes from his own adventurous career! A high-powered workshop, great for those wishing to get a start in journalism-type photography.

Beginners to advanced amateurs – limited to 12 students

International assignment photographer Greg Newington offers aspiring photojournalists the theory and history of photojournalism as well as practice assignments with a focus on how to publish students’ work to build portfolios--plus many interesting anecdotes from his own career!

This workshop will incorporate reportage and portraiture in the field and Photoshop preparation of the images. Photojournalism students will learn the basic skills, theory and history to obtain and report with a camera under deadline conditions.  Assignments will be within Serenbe township.  Emphasis will be placed on students publishing assignments to begin portfolios.  Critiques will be an integral part of the course. Objectives include refining participants photo reporting skills while expanding techniques to include visual storytelling and documenting with emerging technology.  Workshops will include subject matter of: Assignment; Spot News; General News; Covering the Issues; Features; Portraits; Sports; The Photo Story; Photo Illustrations; Photo Editing; Cameras and Film; Digital Images; Ethics.

About the Instructor

Greg Newington has worked as a Photographer/Editor for Newspapers and publishing companies in Australia and The Middle East for over 38 years.

His photographs and illustrations have appeared in over 300 publications worldwide. He was Director of Photography for Australia’s prestigious Fairfax group for 11 years, overseeing the management and creative direction of 16 magazines and 2 newspapers. Greg also spent 3 years as the Photographic Editor of Australia’s national daily newspaper, News Ltd’s  ‘The Australian’ and worked extensively in the field as a news photographer and photo-journalist in Somalia, The Sudan, Bosnia, Cambodia, China, Laos and Vietnam.

His news photography won an Australian Press Photographer of The Year award in 1988 and his photo illustrations won second and third prizes in the 2002 Nikon Australia National Press Awards. Greg was appointed to The Walkley Board.

In 2003 and was chairman of judges for the Walkley-Nikon Awards for Excellence in Journalism.

He was head of Photography for Motivate Publishing in The United Arab Emirates where he was responsible for the photographic content and creative direction of a stable of magazines and books including ‘Hello Magazine’,  ‘Open Skies’ and ‘Emirates Woman’. Greg works from his Gallery and studio in The Serenbe community in Georgia and in Adelaide and Sydney in Australia.
