Basics and refresher classes for beginners and "rusty" printers with Jeani Elbaum, Jenna Duffy and Sonya Jilani from the TPPS Lab.

SPC and the TPPS lab offer these three basic level ½ day workshops on making photographic prints regularly throughout the year. Instruction includes how to make traditional color or traditional B&W prints from negatives in the traditional photography darkroom, and how to make great prints from your digital images using our digital lab and color profiling software. Students will gain skills to make their own prints at The Photographer’s Print Studio lab in traditional, digital, B&W and color formats. Our lab is the only resource in the Southeast that offers this full range of service to all photographers!

Each ½ day workshop is offered separately, but sign up for 2 in one day and get a discount and a free lunch at the Blue-Eyed Daisy Café in Serenbe.

Traditional B&W printing: 9:30am - 12:45pm
Maximum students - 10
This workshop will include an introduction to printing in the black and white darkroom, Students will learn details about the enlargers, timers, chemicals, adjusting contrast and “burning and dodging” to produce the best classic silver-gelatin prints. Does not include film processing.

Traditional Color printing: 1:45 - 5:00pm
Maximum students - 10
This workshop will include an introduction to printing in the color darkroom, Students will learn details about the enlargers, timers, color correction, and the use of the color processor in order to produce their own traditional color chromogenic prints. Does not include film processing.

Digital printing: 9:30am - 12:45 pm & 1:45 pm - 5:00pm
Maximum of 4 students per session
This workshop covers the basics of printing at the TPPS Lab. Students will learn to print on the Epson 9600 Color Printer, the Epson 9600 Piezography Black & White Printer. Students will create 2 11 x 14 prints, one color and one black and white using TPPS in-house paper. Students will learn:

- general operations for lab printers and computers

- review photoshop color workspaces, the color gamut and which files to use for printing

- the fundamentals of color management input vs output

- how and why it is necessary to calibrate monitors, bring your laptop!

- how and why it's important to use custom paper profiles

Students will receive a TPPS lab for reference and a free hour of printing if they join as a member.

*Students need to bring: a thumb drive or dvd with 2 final flattened files 11"x14" at a resolution of 300 dpi, one to create an 11x14 color print and the second to create an 11x14 black and white print

About the Instructors

Jeani Elbaum creates imagery based on sociological themes often pertaining to womanhood, family, and interpersonal relationships. She works in a variety of photographic media, including black and white, color and alternative processes. She has exhibited her work in various galleries in the Atlanta area and has received a number of awards including the Juror’s Award in the exhibition Pan terminus, juried by Julian Cox, Curator of Photography at the High Museum of Art. She graduated from the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design at Georgia State University in May 2008 with a BFA in Photography and a BA in Art History.  http://www.jeanielbaum.com


Sonya Jilani is an avid lover of all things visual. She graduated from Georgia State University with a BFA in Photography in 2007. Her photographic passion is alternative processes and she exhibited in several group shows in the Atlanta area since 2004 in venues such as Beep Beep Gallery, Gallery 100, Temple Gallery, King Plow Arts Center, Studio Swan, and more. Sonya Jilani currently is the Lab Manager for the Serenbe Photography Center and is teaching the Alternative Process Workshop


Jenna Duffy earned a Bachelor's Degree in Photography from the Art Institute of Colorado in 2006, where she spent her time photographing fashion and portraits for talent agencies, assisting models and actors build and update portfolios. She moved on to Brooklyn to pursue connections in an epicenter of fashion and embark on a photographic journey through New York capturing images of the people and places that inspire her most to this day. Jenna recently returned to her native Atlanta to launch a freelance consulting company, offering photography, marketing, graphic and web design to small businesses. Jenna enjoys the meticulous art of printing and got involved with the Photographer's Print Studio to develop the foundation for the digital print lab at SPC. Jenna now works as the Assistant Director to the Serenbe Photography Center and is co-leading the Children's Photography Camp.
